Thus, it is my intention to exegete this passage with a historical, grammatical and theological method.Ĭontemporary studies have the tendency to see the Savior’s work in terms of his earthly life, disassociating redemption from the cosmos, which inevitably results in a secular scientific approach to creation. Almost every influential Christian scholar and theologian throughout history has dealt with the book of Romans, including Origen, Chrysostom, Augustine, Aquinas, and Luther who wrote in his commentary that Romans, “is truly the most important piece in the New Testament.” Though so much has been interpreted from previous translations, it is necessary for each generation to produce a fresh translation and seek to understand the text for what it was originally intended. It is important to state that since Paul wrote this letter, it has held significant importance for the theology and doctrine of the church. Further, I want to suggest that Paul does not intend to eliminate the distinction of the Jew, but instead, highlight it for his eagerness and lack of shame. I want to make the case that Paul’s purpose in the book of Romans is to unite first century believers under a specific good news, with distinction that it was first given to the Jew by means of God’s faithfulness, and is now made available to the Greek by means of faith. Though this text is highly debated for many reasons, there is a consensus among most Biblical scholars and theologians that the interpretation of the rest of Romans hinges upon these two verses, making their meaning extremely significant.
